Art Exhibit – Part I

I would love it if each of you who follows this blog posts something about something you absolutely LOVE to do, be it making a good pot of spaghetti, painting something that means something to you, or whatever brings Edison in all his brightness he created for us into your heart.  I am going to share some of mine here.  I am NOT a professional artist in the sense of having a degree of art, and have had very little professional training of any kind.  But what I DO know is what I like, and what speaks to my heart.  I love fiber art, or art quilts and others too, but I do the art quilts.  I love anything unique, and I love things made from nature or from recycled things.  And I love urban art and also what I call interactive art.  This is art that causes the viewer to need to interact with the art in some manner to perhaps try to figure it out or its message to viewers.  And I love to put it everywhere – not just in the house or an exhibit or publication, but anywhere my mind decides would be fun to have some art.  So if you are expecting some really polished stuff, you probably should go to a different place.  This is stuff that comes from the center of who I am.

I am the Editor of a book filled with the writings of the lives of 23 physically challenged fiber artists: Artful Alchemy: Physically Challenged Fiber Artists Creating, and another called Pumpkin, Pumpkin: Folklore, History, Planting Care, and Good Eating. I am also an advocate for anti-bullying of any age, any race or belief system. I say what I mean and mean what I say, and I have a huge heart for any child or adult with physical challenges of any kind; this includes those with developmental or emotional challenges. These challenges, after all, are not out-of-body challenges.

  6. oh……my art if you call it that is I love to write about our outdoor adventures, but in a way that illustrates how the outdoors and life intersect together in our struggles; coping and dealing with issues in living. And thus to get people to get outside; discover themselves and to be inspired.

    1. Thank you so kindly, Sue, and yes, it is one of the things I have done in art. Art and writing have been the things that have kept me going through challenges, and I would not want to live without them ever. Oh, this is cute. I love living things so much, and I have a pet spider who lives in a little tree stump in front of my neighbor’s house. I named him Gus. Well, yesterday a orange-colored (that’s VERY special and unique around here) praying mantis showed up on the gate of my front porch. I have decided it is a her, and I have made friends with her and named her Ginger. I keep going outside and talking to her gently and she stayed in that same place all night and was waiting for me when I came out this morning. I am a little worried about her because I don’t know why she is not moving around or seeming to be on the lookout for food, but I took a lid of water and put it where she can get it. I read up on them and they do need water, and when it is cold, they need warmth too. Anyway, I am so enjoying having another creature around. I went outside to see if I could find some kind of bug for her, but no luck so far. She definitely needs some food, but she might have found that spot to be a good hunting place. Life is so sacred. I will be showing more of my variety of art soon. Anne

    1. Thank you kindly. I intend to post more of my ideas and artwork on the blog as quickly as I can get to it. I am having trouble making one image larger while keeping its integrity overall. It’s all about having fun and expressing things I believe in though.

      2. I want you and everyone who reads this blog to understand something about “artistic abilities.” Our vision of what that constitutes is truly limited. Every single human being has some form of artistic abilities. You may make the best omelet, or perhaps you can fix a car or piece of equipment better than anyone else, or there is something within your bag of tricks that we all get in this life that you can do well. Have you ever thought about listing all the things you really LOVE to do or that you feel good about doing? Now I have read your writing, and I would say you have a high degree of writing meaningful and interesting posts. You are a great writer. Is that not the art of writing? So don’t limit your definitions of artistic abilities. I think of you as a highly skilled artist. I want you to remember that being sacred means that you are given a wonderful a magical set of things you can do well when you get here – sort of like Harry Potter if you will! So now you don’t need to “take up” anything unless it is in your soul and spirit to do it. Blessings to you every single day of your life, Anne Copeland

    3. Amen to that. We will all be “works in progress” for all of our lives. The main thing is to be happy that you have writing skills as you do, and to enjoy every single word you will ever write regardless of anything else.

  10. Your artwork is very creative and colorful. Just the sort of thing children love. The car is very unique. I love the part that looks like quilts. I have not done much quilting, but have made a little stab at it. Years ago I designed an applique quilt and had all the pattern pieces cut out, but could never decide what colors I wanted to do it in. But then I just never found time to do it either. Thanks for sharing these photos.

    1. Hi Diane, Thank you very much. You would be amazed at how many adults love it too or I should say loved it because I no longer have it. After 21 years, it was time to share with others. What I loved most was how everyone responded to it. It always made even the most stressed people smile.

    2. I am putting together a little booklet called “Accidental Art.” In it I talk about one of my favorite pieces of art I ever made. We were having a little class in my little art group, and a very favorite friend and teacher came to show us how to do her art. Well, as I noted, she is a favorite and I absolutely love her art (Pamela Allen of Canada), but I cannot do someone else’s art. So some of us were dragging our feet, not trying to be rude, but it was just not in our bag o’ tricks. So next came what I consider to be one of the best teachers ever. She realized things were not working for a couple of us, and quickly changed up her course, starting to teach it instead almost on the same format as a life drawing course. So in one of the first exercises, we had 15 minutes to take cloth, glue stick, and our imaginations and come up with a quilt design, obviously not stitched or anything like that. I looked around and did not have any funky fabric, so went to look in my friend Jamie Fingal’s fabric trash can, and asked her if it was ok if I got some of the scraps out of it. Of course she said yes, and I quickly grabbed this and that, not trying to match anything, and running back to my table because now I could work in my way. I will do a post on Accidental Art on one of my upcoming blogs. Anyway, I had more fun making that piece, and took it home, stitched on it, and you know that when I had a little one woman show at our local city hall (this was years ago), a lady called me the next day, and when the show was over, she came to look at the pieces, and wanted to buy that one especially. I am not a big money gal, so I was happy to let her have it for a very tiny price. For me, it was not at all about the show, the sale, or any of that, but creating like a child, accidentally and with a mind and heart absolutely overflowing with joy! Now that is what art is all about.

    1. Thanks ever so much. I love art as a way to express ourselves. Not worried about making biggie bucks, being famous or any of that stuff. Just create when I want to express something in some way. I love that the people on the road and in parking lots treat me so differently now. Very fun!

    1. Do it now. I can tell that verse is in your heart and soul. I believe in you from what I have seen and read. You have a wonderful talent with words. I bet your books will be loved by many people. You make things come alive.

      1. Yes, poetry is in my heart. You are so kind, I’m happy if some of my words spoke to you. There is a copy of my first collection in the California State Library and also for sale at Shakespeare and Company in Paris, in their Poet’s Corner. Alas, there just are not enough hours in the day… with three blogs and about two hundred pages into a first novel… Actually, the story starts in Southern California and I’ve talked to the publisher about using a photo of the old library that was my sanctuary as a child for the cover.

  16. You are truly an empowered and amazing woman! Oh, I must see if I can get a copy of the first collection in the California State Library. This would be the most interesting story, I am sure. Normally I have not been a reader of fiction these days (though I was as a younger person), but I would be excited to read this one as I have a feeling it would be well worth the read.
